History
Very little is known about the origin of this ship. Most likely the design came from the mysterious Empire in the unknown regions which Benulobiweed Inc. had business with. However, the company producing the first models is long forgotten (it might have been an enthusiastic subcontractor). What is remembered is that the original drafts showed a Lambda-class T-4a shuttle so the first model was named Lambda Shuttle. However, after the first set of 100 ships left the slave-laboured shipyard the name was hastily changed to Lambda Freighter T5-F01 and the manager disposed of. Even after readjusting the price and offering some equipment in the package hardly any buyers could be attracted. With a mass roughly ten times that of a Anaconda (Oolite) but with only a maximum of 90 t of cargo this construction was a nightmare. What Spaceship? noted on a side mark that this must be the ship with the most luxurious crew quarters GalCop ever saw. Needless to say that not even 6 months later the Lambda Freighter T5-F02 was introduced. It didn't prevent the bankruptcy of the company, so with only 2 models the first of the Lambda series became history.
Today you need to be lucky to see a Lambda Freighter on the ship lanes or in the shipyard of a station. While practically inexistent in developed systems, some are still in use and traded in Anarchies, Feudals or Multi-Governments and in places with a low tech-level. Be careful if you want to buy one: a cheap price could well cost you more in the longterm.
Lambda Freighter T5-F01
For a civil ship of this size surprisingly fast and maneuverable. On the other hand most internal space was wasted and since it is too large to dock at most stations the time you win from the speed you loose later while waiting for your Robotic Cargo Loaders and a shuttle service to unload your cargo. There was a reason for the T5-F02.
While most of the time you will see ships lacking maintenance once in a while you could get lucky and find one in acceptable conditions

Lambda Hospital T5-F01
A by Medical Designs Technology altered Lambda Freighter T5-F01, now used as an orbital hospital. 6 attached Medical Shuttles and several Medical Crafts are available to transport patients between the ship and the planet. Since GalCop interstellar conventions prohibit medical ships from carrying heavy weaponry this vessel is usually flying in convoys, typically with 2 Moray Medical Boats for assistance and 4 Moray Guard Boats as escorts.
Lambda Freighter T5-F02
To distinguish this ship from the first model it was painted in green instead of white and while it still wasn't able to dock at most stations it did include some major improvements. With 8 missile slots, 4 additional turrets and standard Shield Boosters the armament did get a boost. While some speed was lost it now offered 2000 t modular space which, depending on the current demand, easily could be switched between cargo and passenger requirements.
In daily business the T5-F02 had around 1000 t cargo space and was able to transport 100's of passengers at the same time. The downside of the huge improved capacity was that the assistance of a shuttle service was a must, the Robotic Cargo Loaders would take weeks to handle all the cargo. It's kind of ironic that most of these ships were sold after the bankruptcy of the company to cover some of their debts.

Remarks
Under no circumstances this page is meant to criticize the original Lambda Shuttle, it is still a nice OXP. This is merely a try to include the ship in existing lore while explaining the discrepancy between mass and cargo space. All thanks to Azzameen (original) and Charlie (storyline).
If you are interested in this ship and plan to install the OXP be aware that an update of the original Lambda Shuttle ships to freighters is included. While most details are the same the texture and some modifications (positive and negative) will also become effective. The Lambda Hospital T5-F01 and the Medical Shuttle are NPC only.
2 variants of player ships could be found from time to time in some shipyards. The "rusty" variant is cheaper but lacking maintenance therefore the ship systems are weaker and an overhaul is needed more often. You have been warned.
For the player there are 2 possibilities to dock at a station or carrier. He can either activate the docking computer or request docking clearance ("Shift" + "L"). In both cases the station/carrier will send you shuttles to ferry you and your cargo to the destination. The shuttle service includes priority docking so a few seconds later you are in. However, for the effort a small fee is deducted from your account.
Known Issues
These ships got customized AI's but are using BigShips OXP as well. However, launching and docking at stations for NPC's are prevented.
These textures were designed for V 1.88, the latest Oolite V 1.90 is using a much brighter light model and therefore rendering the appearance of the ships. If you prefer the previous light here is a tip from another_commander: modifying shaders
