The Saiph is a super-agile fighter-interceptor developed in parallel with the Rigel. Built around a large fuel-injecting engine unit, the Saiph relies on speed and manoeuvrability for defence, its small size preventing the installation of the kind of energy units and shield enhancements usually found in military ships. The Saiph’s unusual control surfaces serve to provide stability during atmospheric flight, while in space they are used to deflect thrust from retro-rockets to further increase the ship’s agility.

Despite being developed as a fleet combat craft, ex-service models are occasionally seen in private hands, where they have become an attractive option for wealthy bounty hunters. Saleza frowns upon the use of any of their ships for acts of piracy or murder, and rumours abound that the company will pay handsome rewards for any information about the misuse of their intellectual property in this way.
Its flying wing design offers maximises the ship's internal stores capacity while at the same time minimises its fronal cross-section, making the Bellatrix a difficult target for enemy defences.
When they designed the Scorpion Frigate and the Deamon Cruiser, Ramon Security Limited never really considered that they would need to design a fighter craft to support these large vessels. But when the Eszausveian Navy approached them asking for a small, agile and cheap fighter, they were surprised. Apparently, the Navy had been dealing with space-borne dissidents and needed light fighters to cover the flanks and rear of their big ships, so they could concentrate on the tasks they had been assigned.

Thus, the Mongoose was hastily constructed and deployed, a light fighter in every sense of the word. Equipped with the most basic equipment, the Mongoose is one of the smallest ships in GalCop space, dwarfed even by the Adder, and mounts only a single laser facing forward and a solitary missile pylon. It's energy reserves are equally pitiful and due to it's lack of power, it can't even upgrade its minimal shielding.

However, this brevity of construction makes the Mongoose exceedingly cheap to construct and to buy, a factory model Mongoose would set a Commander back only 30,000Cr on average. This low-rates fighter meant that the Eszausveian Navy could essentially flood the approaches to their fleets with swift, agile and tenacious fighters on even the meanest budget.

Running Oolite-Windows

Rxke: /* Running the game */

Overview
The Windows port of Oolite is built from the same source as the Linux and OS-X versions, and has all the features of those versions.

All OXPs should be compatible with the Windows port.

Getting and installing the game
The game may be downloaded from the BerliOS project page for Oolite-PC. The installer is also mirrored at ftp://ftp.alioth.net/oolite

To install, run the executable that you have just downloaded. You will get the familiar Windows installer.

A regular build of changes from the SVN source is being carried out on a regular basis. The complete installer above must be installed before any of the updates will work. The update filename changes with each build, so get the latest update file by following the link here: .

The game has been tested on Windows XP and Windows 2000. It will not run on the DOS-extender versions of Windows such as Windows 95, 98 or ME. It is expected it will run with Vista, so long as drivers are available for the hardware you have. You are advised to run the latest 3D graphics drivers from your 3D card manufacturer.

Errata
There was a problem in the 1.62 build that caused memory exhaustion. Please read this page to find out how to manually patch the Windows installation. Users of later builds (for example, the current -344 build on the BerliOS site) will not suffer from this issue.

Running the game
Find the Oolite icon in the Start -> Programs menu and click on it. Alternatively double click the Oolite program icon on the desktop. Note that the following key combination will get you out of 'graphics related trouble':

Shift-Escape: Quit Oolite immediately

If your game seems to have unreasonably low fps performance (check this in-game by hitting SHIFT-F) it is strongly recommended you visit your graphic cards' suppliers website and download and install the latest drivers.

Installing OXPs
You will need to find where the oolite.app folder is placed: it should be in C:\Program Files\Oolite. Create an AddOns folder beside the oolite.app folder. Put OXPs in here. Note that some OXPs when unzipped contain a folder with a README file and then the OXP - in this case, it's best to unzip the OXP somewhere other than AddOns and copy the OXP folder once unpacked into AddOns.

Notes for amd64 users
No builds for 64-bit versions of Windows have yet been made, however, given the proper availability of graphics and sound drivers, the 32-bit version should run on 64-bit Windows. 32 bit Windows running on amd64 hardware should not have an issue.

Building Oolite from source
# Download and install the necessary software
## Download and install svn for Windows: . Accept all defaults given by the installer.
## Download and install GNUstep for windows: [ftp://ftp.gnustep.org/pub/gnustep/binaries/windows/base-1.11.1-gui-0.10.1/GNUstep-base-1.11.1-gui-0.10.1-3.exe]. Accept all defaults given by the installer.
## Download the SDL files required to build Oolite:
## Unzip this file to <code>c:\GNUstep\Local</code>
# Get the source and build it (note, the source comes from the oolite-linux project)
## Start the GNUstep command line (<i>Start -> Programs -> GNUstep Development -> MSYS for GNUstep</i>) and issue the following commands:
## <code>cd $GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT</code>
## <code>export PATH=$PATH:$GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/bin</code>
## <code>mkdir oolite</code>
## <code>cd oolite</code>
## <code>svn checkout svn://svn.berlios.de/oolite-linux/trunk</code>
## <code>cd trunk</code>
## <code>make</code>
# To run the game in the build environment:
## Before running the first time: <code>cp $GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/bin/*.dll oolite.app</code>
## <code>openapp oolite.app</code>

Assuming you have installed one of Nic's releases as detailed above, you can easily keep updating the installation from the latest source. In the <code>$GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/oolite/trunk</code> directory, issue the commands:

# <code>export PATH=$PATH:$GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/bin</code>
# <code>svn up</code>
# <code>rm -rf oolite.app/Resources; make</code>

You only need to issue the export PATH command when you first start the command line. The rm -rf command before make is required because GNUstep for Windows cannot parse the XML plist file format, and the build fails when it tries to read one of these generated each time the build is performed. This failure is not important, and the process still works, but it is annoying.

Then use the following script to copy the new files over the existing installation:

<pre>
OA="/c/Program Files/Oolite/oolite.app"
cd $GNUSTEP_LOCAL_ROOT/oolite/trunk
if [ oolite.app/oolite.exe -nt "$OA/oolite.exe" ]; then
echo "Updating oolite.exe"
cp oolite.app/oolite.exe "$OA/oolite.exe"
fi

for a in AIs Config Images Models Music Sounds Textures; do
for b in Resources/$a/*; do
c=`basename $b`
if [ $b -nt "$OA/Contents/Resources/$a/$c" ]; then
Hailing from the Seosu system in Galaxy 4, The Capisastra are a diminutive race of amphibians who appear somewhat froglike. They are a warlike and belligerent race who have engaged GalCop forces on many occasions.

They are thought to be one of the oldest spacefaring races in the galaxy, predating almost all of the spacefaring races thus far encountered. Many worlds, including Earth, have reported possible encounters with this race throughout thier history.

Nature
Seosu is a jungle-like world. The Capisastra were not the dominant creature on thier planet originally, but through time eliminated the competitors to become number one. Their tenacity has allowed them to evolve into strong, resilient warriors.

The Capisastra are a very organised race, but thier society is built on power. They are very competitive and have fallen into factions. The last count placed the number of factions at 7. These factions will, however, place any bad blood aside whilst in space.

The planet Seosu is alarmingly low on natural resources. Water is scarce and animals are at dangerously low numbers. This was originally the impetus for the Capisastra space programme as they looked to the stars for ways to keep thier race alive. They do trade on occasion, but thier nature seems to drive them to conflict if their demands for aid are not met to their wishes.

Presence in Space
Their battle fleets are legendary, and many tales have been recounted of these fleets descending upon unsuspecting planets. These fleets are often described as scavenger fleets, since the Capisastra will land upon planets and begin mining many of the natural resources of each world.

Ships and Weapons
Thier ships are geared towards planetary assault, but do have considerable capacity to defend themselves in space. Their most fearsome weapon is the grav bomb, which contains high explosive charges as well as energy charges. These are fired from the relative rear of the ship. In planetary assaults, however, these ships descend to earth using thier main engines to brake thier descent. This places the grav bomb tube to the bottom of the ship's angle of attack. During these assaults, the ships use lateral pulse engines to maneouver to avoid attack from the planetary defence systems.

They have three classes of ships that are commonly seen. The first, usually seen at the forefront of battle, is a dedicated assault ship. It features a fast-reload bomb bay as well as advanced jamming technology that will scramble most missiles or aircraft guidance systems.

The second class is primarily a cargo ship, containing only the bomb bay. The rest of the ship is dedicated to carrying the natural resources they seek. Special sections can be converted to carry liquids.

The third and last class is a multi-role platform carrying drones and supplies of bombs. It also is equipped with a bomb bay and a sizeable cargo area. These ships drop a number of drones into the atmosphere before nearing the assault altitude. These drones are equipped with up to four bombs and will use these in support of the attack force.

General Guide
The Capisastra generally fly around in fleets of 5 or more ships. A lone shark pilot may be able to take this fleet on, but care must be taken since the Capisastra are noteworthy combateers. On occasion a battle fleet may be encountered, which may number up to 200 ships. If you see one of these, run.

The Capisastra will only be encountered in Galaxy 4, since they do not use Galactic Hyperdrives. This is due to the declining state of thier homeworld which has dictated that they must remain in thier own sector to return supplies as quickly as possible.

Brief
The Scanner Targeting Enhancement is a useful addition to any ship. It adds several improvements upon the ship's basic ID system, displaying:
* A target lock box around the selected object.
* An arrow directional indicator anchored to the cross-hairs.
* The object's name from the ID computer.
* The distance to target in km.
* The object's legal status (if available).

Usage
The STE is activated by pressing r on your astrogation console, and will lock onto the next object to pass in front of the cross-hairs. A selected ID target may be transferred to missile target by pressing t. To deactivate the STE, hit u.

Rxke: dosent-->doesn't

Most important thing you have to have onboard is an escape capsule. It brings you to the next public station if your ship is shot down. Otherwise you will be killed. That doesn't mean the game is over, but you have to restart again. All the experience you earned so far will be lost.

The next thing you should buy is a better gun. There are two types of guns, laser and plasma accelerators. As soon as possible you should change to plasma accelerators - these start out at the diminutive but highly effective nano plasma accelerator weighing in at only 6 tonnes. They do more damage and consume less space than the equivalent laser. Connect it with a laser cooling booster, so you can fire much longer with full power. The laser cooling booster works with any kind of weapon.

Your ship should have at least one scanner. It is recommended to have up to three of them onboard. They will help you to pinpoint the enemy. Your shots will be more precise.

Then there should be shields on your ship. The more the better. Shields prevent your hull of being damaged by the enemy. How much shield you can use depends on the defensive skill of you and your crew. It is recommended that you connect the shield with one or more energy booster units. They will recharge the shields, so they can protect you better.

Atmospheric shielding is one of the default equipment of any ship. It is a vital piece of equipment, because you must have it to dock at stations on planets.

On larger ships it is a good idea to install one or more hull repair systems. They will fix any damage. They work slow even if you some of them, but it is cheaper than repairing your ship only at stations. There is the feature of repairing damage 'manually' (self-repair), but this is a very dangerous feature. Hull repair systems are more recommendable.

An OXP (Oolite eXpansion Pack) is an enhancement to the game Oolite. Typically, an OXP is downloaded as a ZIP file, which is expanded and placed in Oolite's AddOns folder. The OXP itself is a folder which takes the form of the icon above, which Oolite scans when it is started. An OXP could be a new game object (such as a ship, space station or a moon), a mission, or a combination of several elements. OXPs can use all of the facilities of Oolite, including some that are not used in the standard, unexpanded game.

Downloading OXPs
Most OXPs are found at The Oolite Satellite Resource Site (see also the old CapnHack OoSat)

Installing an OXP
Unzip the OXP and place it in the folder named AddOns. Sometimes the zipped files contain several folders, make sure you only copy the folder -or file for Macintoshes- ending with .oxp into the AddOns folder. This folder is found in different locations, depending on the platform:

===Macintosh=== Found in the folder that contains the Oolite application.

Troubleshooting: If you get an error saying "The item could not be moved because "AddOns" cannot be modified", that can happen if you weren't the user that installed Oolite.
The solution is to put the OXP's of your choice in ~/Library/Application&nbsp;Support/Oolite/AddOns/ instead (you may need to create this folder).
The error could also be triggered because you’re running from the disk image, you’ll need to copy the game somewhere else. Having done so, if you still get the error, use the Get Info command on the AddOns folder, open the Ownership & Permissions pane and check that it says You Can: Read & Write.

===Linux=== If the game was installed system-wide, it is in /usr/lib/Oolite/AddOns. If it was installed just for the currently logged in user, it will be in the user's home directory, in $HOME/.local/lib/Oolite/AddOns

===Win32=== If the installable package was used (post Jan 06) then the AddOns folder needs to be created in C:\Programs Files\Oolite. Note that this applies if the default installation location is used. If the install location is changed then use the path to the Oolite folder that correspnds to your installation.
If the GNUStep dedicated versions (pre-Jan 2006) is used, then the AddOns folder must be created in the oolite.app folder.

After unzipping the file, make sure that it is the OXP folder that put into the AddOns directory - some zipped OXPs can contain a top level folder with a readMe file, and the actual OXP folder is a level further down. If this is the case, move the item with the .oxp extension into the AddOns folder.

Caveats
If you purchase a ship that is an OXP ship and save the game, you will only be able to load that commander as long as this OXP is installed in AddOns. If it's not, Oolite will give you an error instead of trying to load the commander.

Creating an OXP
It is intended to be easy to create expansion packs. With a few simple tools, a player can make small or big changes, and customize the gaming experience.

Overview
Venomous, fortified, durable, and formidable in battle, the mere mention of the name Wolf Mk.II may be sufficient to give experienced pilots the shakes. As they are hugely expensive and demanding to maneuver, it is given that the pilot who commands a Wolf has earned the right to do so.

Scandalous Origins
Once believed to be an extinct craft, or even by some the stuff of myths, the Wolf Mk.I was notorious for its hard shell, and its bite. The designs of this rare ship were thought to have been lost, but were eventually, at some expense, recovered by the Military who saw a great appeal in applying these characteristics to craft in their fleet. The contract was commissioned to the relatively unknown shipyards of Amaliel Corp. for a new ship modified to cater for military needs. Thus the Wolf Mk.II was born.

The events that followed were uncharacteristic of Military history, and much of the factual evidence was later suppressed. It was the Military leadership's intention not to distribute this new ship across the fleet, but to exclusively train the Military's top pilots to form "Wolf Paragon Squadrons". The leadership did not fail in selecting their very most skillful.

There is no denying there were mistakes made during the selections, however. The Paragon squads had barely been instated by the time the first reports of desertion reached High Command. Mass-desertion had soon spread to mad proportions, and it became apparent that shamefully many of "the Military's finest" were unable to resist the temptations that came with commanding such a superiour craft, confronted with relatively feeble resistance. Shockingly large numbers of officers had conspired to form rogue gangs, and went on to exploit this newfound power with little inhibition.

The response from High Command was urgent but would disguise none of the inflicted embarassment. The Paragon Squads were instantly disbanded, and all deserters declared priority outlaws, subject to immediate extermination. The minority of the pilots, those who had stayed loyal to the military cause, were quietly promoted into positions of relative obscurity, and the Amaliel Corp. contract was swiftly cancelled. This resulted in a judicial stink that would not go away despite heavy Military pressure on Amaliel to forget that any deal had ever been made, but in the end the shipbuilders' resistance paid off. As illegal models began to appear, the Military leadership realized that desperate attempts to contain the fiasco were futile, and set to minimize their losses. In an agreement that saw the Military join Amaliel as partners in private enterprise, the Wolf Mk.II would finally be available for sale on the open market.

Aftermath
As the Military came to approach the problems in a more constructive manner, its Propaganda Dept. saw no harm in spreading disinformation concerning the Wolf Mk.II's origins. Several rumours, among them the Wolf's alleged basis in Thargoid technology, never hurt sales and brought focus to the all-important war effort. However, these attempts to blur the truth are swallowed only by the most gullible.
