Maaarcooose has a painful background that has left him with memories of another life and a desire for revenge.

Formally a GalCop experiment to produce superior assassins (he was number 5) for covert operations, his previous memory all but erased from existence, he broke through his programming after many missions and ran from GalCop, threatening the leaders of the operation due to his enhanced abilities but telling them that if they left him alone, he would not pursue them.

For the next five years he lived in seclusion on a planet on a remote portion of chart six colonised by peoples from the oriental continents of ancient earth and married a local woman to whom he devoted his life.

For five years he spent hours each day simply enjoying the secluded life, meditating, mediating local disputes with great skill and understanding or practising exquisite sword work only for the purpose of enhancing his mental state. He became known locally as the state protector, a fairly low responsibility position, generally seen as a figurative title only, but one that he took seriously becoming practically a local peace keeper.

This all came crashing down not long after the birth of his only son.
After a long day mediating on a land dispute in a neighbouring province, he returned home to find shadowy assassins waiting for him. Dispatching them with fantastic skill, he ran to protect his wife, but found her dying on the floor of his home from multiple stab wounds.

Consumed with rage, Maaarcooose vowed revenge and realising that the road to revenge would be hard, no place for a child, gave his infant son a choice. Choose the blade or the toy, promising to send him to be with his mother if he chose the toy. With no understanding, his son chose the sword, damning them both to the path of revenge which his father sought.

Maaarcooose now roams the charts with his young son, seeking out those that created him and making a living as an assassin for hire.

If you see a Pitviper, blasting past you, adorned with the scars of countless battles that may be him. And occasionally you will hear his young son, singing songs of death and betrayal over the comms in a long dead earth language. This ship is equipped with a fairly distinctive weapon system. Next to the standard lasers it has a forward facing, close range cutting weapon. His preferred tactics are to take the majority of a ships shields and energy down from afar with lasers and then close in, using the cutting weapon in a sword like manner, matching the methods in which he wields a conventional blade when up close and personal.

Maaarcooose is a title he no longer uses. He sees it as the name of his former life. He is now Assassin#5. Only when he finally dies and returns to the infinite void will his name be restored.

Alien Items is a collection of short stories set in the Ooniverse, written between 2006 and 2012. Various authors are represented including Dylan Smith, Blaze O' Glory, El Viejo, DaddyHoggy, Commander Wyvern, Ganelon and Drew Wagar.

Status Quo (2006) - The first story in the Oolite Saga. “A brilliant scientist uncovers a terrifying plot to begin a galactic war. Aided by a talented, but reluctant and embittered combateer, he must stop the deployment of a super weapon he invented. A weapon so powerful it threatens to destroy entire worlds.”

Elite came with a Novella called 'The Dark Wheel', which set the scene for the game. 'Status Quo' aims to do the same thing for 'Oolite', introducing Commander Jamesons to the 'Ooniverse'...

Mutabilis (2008) - The second story in the Oolite Saga. “When a series of linked murders forces GalCop to outlaw the shadow organisation known as ‘The Dark Wheel’, a mysterious top secret document must be found in order to stave off a galactic conflict. The document contains a devastating secret; the key to domination, power and control. A secret as old as space itself, the location of the legendary planet ‘Raxxla’”.

Mutabilis' is the sequel to 'Status Quo' and also introduces readers to the adventures of Captain Hesperus. Further accounts of this roguish character can be found in the Calliope story below...

Incursio (2011) - The third story in the Oolite Saga. “When a deadly alien attack is launched across the galaxy, humankind finds itself under-prepared and overwhelmed. As star systems begin to fall, privateers take up the battle alongside the military forces and a desperate plan is hatched to stop the invaders once and for all, before humanity is eradicated.”

Incursio' picks up the story eleven years later and also feature avatars from the Oolite forum: Daddyhoggy, Hesperus, Udian, Coyote, Derik, Cheyd and Maik.

Finis (2011) - The fourth and final part of the Oolite Saga. "With the alien menace poised to overthrow the galaxy a lone group of combateers is all that that stands between them and total annihilation. When one of their number is kidnapped by the aliens and their plans thwarted, the group must decide whether to mount a rescue and risk losing the war, or sacrifice her for the greater good of humankind…"

Drew has also written a number of short stories for the Oolite Universe…

Schism (2007) - ”Lumbering through the deeps of space are the Generation Ships; huge self contained transports driving between the stars at sublight speeds in the midst of thousand year journeys to populate new planets. After 30 generations, a staggering and devastating truth is revealed to the occupants of one such ship…”

Nine (2009) - “The story of an attempt to reach the ‘ninth’ chart. As players familiar with Elite and Oolite will doubtless know there are only eight charts reachable by Galactic Hyperspace. Does the ninth chart exist? Can it be reached? If so, what’s there? This is a slightly chilling tale of the ‘Ooniverse’…”

Ascension (2009) - ”A tale of what might happen when an example of sophisticated technology is suddenly thrust upon a backward culture steeped in religion.”

Replay (2009) - “Difficult to describe even in summary without giving away the plot. It’s only three and a half pages long, so won’t take you long! Enjoy!”

Family (2009) - “an excellent battle and nice interaction between Kemi and the Princess.”

Overview
Although this list was taken from Oolite the data applies well to the BBC Micro version of Classic Elite, and some other versions.

Each entry shows the system number, name, coordinates, tech level, inhabitants, government and a comment on the system.

For OXP writers, note that references to a particular galaxy in Oolite (in a Planetinfo.plist entry for example), should subtract 1 from the galaxy number – Galaxy 1 is referred to as 0, etc. The Technology Level numbers shown in the lists are the numbers displayed to the player (range 1-15), and again subtract 1 from this number (range 0-14) to get the value entered into planetinfo.plist.

* A spreadsheet of all galaxies can be downloaded in or .

* Downloadable vector graphic PDF's of the 8 charts have also been created and can be downloaded from the links below.

* Online interactive maps.
** OOLite Interactive Map courtousy of PhantorGorth. It does 2D & 3D modes for displaying the planet map and also a superb jump route calculation.
** OOliteInfo from Maaarcooose is also available which not only displays the galaxy maps and all planet data, but also allows modification of the seed numbers used to generate the galaxy data.

Where do these crazy names come from?
If you read through the source code and/or binary for either Elite or Oolite, you will not find any text containing the list of planets and their properties. The entire universe (including the famous edible poet) is constructed programmatically (using a truncated Fibonacci function) from a handful of seed numbers and the strings "ABOUSEITILETSTONLONUTHNOAL" (used by the planet description string) and " ' 'LEXEGEZACEBISOUSESARMAINDIREA'ERATENBERALAVETIEDORQUANTEISRION" which is used both by the planet description string and to generate all the system names in the 8 Galaxies (the single quotes indicate placeholders where the planet name generation can be terminated early). The algorithm was reverse-engineered from the original BBC disk by Christian Pinder, and implemented in Objective-C for Oolite. Further details are given in the discussion of Elite's random number generators.

* In this spreadsheet (please note that this spreadsheet is in OpenDocument format) you can see some of the algorithms in action where they are used to calculate the names, positions, inhabitants and other parameters for all 256 planets for a selected Galaxy plus a plot of the Galaxy (Sorry, but no links between worlds are plotted). You can also use this to view what could have been if a different seed number was used for the Galaxies. UPDATE: It now calculates the planet descriptions and there is now a statistics sheet.

* A related spreadsheet showing useful trading routes is also available for download.

* There is also an interactive map of the Oolite Galaxies including route finding (by PhantorGorth). Also includes a 3D option. Works in Firefox, Chrome, IE9+, Safari (but not v6 on a Mac), Opera (the quick zoom has a side effects caused by Opera).

* The files used to build the vector maps are all available online for download HERE. These require adobe Illistrator 10 to open.
